An early EF Payne bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip and built for what feels to me like a #4. The rod weighs 3.1 ounces on my scale. This is fairly close to the specs for a Model 200 rod, but without a hang tag we'll never know for sure. Likely a late 1920's model but professionally refinished in the 1960's judging by the straight-tube tip tops. The rest of the rod retains the original period hardware including the pot belly step ferrules. The rod is full length but one tip has a 3/4" clear wrap just below the tip top. The rod action is a medium for a #4. Brown main wraps with pale green and an orange edge at the keeper, ferrules, and tip tops. Agate stripper. Excellent varnish, the ferrule fits are very good, and the rod is straight. The ferrules as well as the cap-and-ring reel seat hardware are oxidized. The blunt cigar grip is 5" long and original. Walnut seat. The butt cap has the die stamp "EF Payne, Makers, Highland Mills, NY". The ring retains about 50% of its oxidation. Non original bag (looks like a Leonard) but it comes in the original tube with grey felt inside the cap.
