A gorgeous E.F. Payne model 98 bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. The rod weighs 3.2 ounces on my scale. What a prize! Near mint condition. One tip has been cast, the other not. This rod has a delightful medium-fast action. The rod dates from the early 1960s with the "Made for Abercrombie & Fitch" die stamp. The ferrule fits are perfect, and all sections are straight. The used tip has just a hint of varnish void, brassing, and the start of a crack at the ferrule wrap. The other tip is as if it just came from Jim’s hands. Flamed and oven-treated cane with perfect varnish. Brown main wraps with yellow edges on all, and an extra band of red at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripping guide is a perfection, and the rod has the finial ferrule plugs. The ferrule oxidation is 100% intact. The grip is 5 1/2" and turned to a medium cigar profile. The Spanish cedar seat is varnished and 3 1/2" long, with a flat for the reel. The cap has the "Payne, reg. U.S. Pat. Off." and, as noted, the Abercrombie & Fitch stamp. The cap retains 99% of the original oxidation. Bag, hang tag, and tube are all original, and the rod tube has the red A&F sticker. You don't find Payne 98's in this kind of superb original condition very often, if at all!
