For sale here is a very rare 7'6" E.W. Edwards De Luxe bamboo rod. Circa 1925 made by Eustis Edwards. The rod is featured in Patrick Garner's wonderful book "Playing With Fire". The rod is perhaps the only signed 7'6" Edwards De Luxe rod in existence.
The rod is in excellent original condition, including the bag and tube, each of which have completely retained their labels. Both quite rare in their own regard. The wraps are all secure and the varnish is in remarkable shape considering the age of the rod. The female ferrule has a slight click to it but due to the rarity of this rod is perhaps best left as is.
The rod has a beautiful honey colored blank with chestnut brown silks and gold tipping. The script is in the characteristic Edwards' yellow. The hook-keeper is missing which is quite common with early Edwards rods. Beautiful agate stripping guide. Another extremely rare feature of this rod is the creme colored bakelite winding check. The butt is ever so slightly swelled just before the grip. The cigar grip, though soiled, is in excellent shape with no ridging, gouging, or hook marks. Down-locking cap and ring reel seat with a mortised butternut spacer.
The rod weighs a lean 3 1/4 oz. Ferrule size 11/64, the fit is excellent. The crisp action is on the faster side of medium fast, and smooth. This is a wonderful dry-fly rod by today's standards let alone the early 20th century.
A finely preserved and very historic rod that highlights what a fine craftsman and how ahead of his time E.W. Edwards was.
