A nice H.L. Leonard model 39-H bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #6 line. Serial #2847 (1974-75). The rod weighs 3.8 ounces on my scale. Medium fast action. The 38-H and 39-H were the most popular of the Leonard red wrap line. Very light use, with mild hand soiling to the grip and just the start of some wear to the snake guides. The rod is straight and ferrule fits are as original. Blonde cane, varnished, and done in a three up node pattern. The wraps are 326 red with a band of purple and maroon at the keeper and male ferrules. Standard Leonard step ferrule on polished bright. The grip is 5 3/4" long and turned to a medium cigar profile. The seat is a down-locking aluminum screwlock with a butternut spacer. The pocket cap is nickel silver and is stamped “H.L.L., H.L. Leonard Rod Co., Maker.” The yellow poplin rod bag has the owner’s name written at the top as well as A+B for the tip sleeves. The rod has the standard Leonard tube.
