EF Payne Bamboo Fly Rod 7'6" 2/2 #4/5

3146

A nice E.F. Payne bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels to me like a #4 or #5. The rod weighs 3.6 ounces. There is no hang tag but based on the specifications I suspect it is a model 101. Very crisp DF action. Used but well cared for. There is some wear to the bronze reverse twist guides and moderate discoloration of the grip and a bit of ferrule wrap cracking from casting. There are also two small varnish chips in the upper third of one tip. This is all fairly minor though for a rod of this age and use. The varnish is in remarkably good condition and the rod is straight and the ferrule fits tight. Flamed cane with lighter nodes. Brown main wraps with a yellow edge, purple edge at the keeper and male ferrule. The stripper is a perfection and the snakes are bronze reverse twist. The step ferrules retain 99.5% of the original jet black oxidation. The grip is a 6" medium cigar. The seat is varnished Spanish cedar under a cap and ring which retains 75% of the oxidation on the ring and about 90% on the butt cap. The butt cap has the "Payne" stamp in a cartouche and "reg. U.S. Pat. off." while the reverse side has the "Sold by Von Lengerke & Antoine, Chicago" stamp. There is no hang tag on the rod but I suspect everything is original. The only catch is that the rod tube is not and is an Orvis one instead (it would be great to put this nice rod back into a Payne tube if the buyer can find one!).
