An 8'9" very early Ed Payne, 3-piece 2-tip built with a slow wet fly action for a #3 or #4 line. This rod was refinished by me in the early '80s. Done in chinese red with black edges and chinese red intermediates. Leonard catskill-like signature wraps over light colored cane. An extra fine tapered grip. Rolled and soldered ring on the all metal seat. Stamped on the pocket cap "E.F. Payne Maker, Highland Mills N.Y." There are a lot of early Leonard influences to be seen in this rod, including the grip, check, and wrap colors. This is by far the earliest Payne I have ever seen. Tip tube and outer canvas bag. Large Modern aluminum tube for extra protection.
