A nice EF Payne fly rod, 8', 2-piece, 2-tips, built for a #5 or #6 line. No hang tag but likely a model 102 or 103. Very good original condition, with some tiny chips in a few spots in the varnish but they are very minor. The rod shows some signs of the varnish having been polished. Flamed and oven tempered cane wrapped brown with yellow edges and a maroon tipping at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripping guide is a perfection and the snake guides are reverse twist bronze. The ferrule oxidation shows very little brassing although the ferrule has some hook dig chips in the varnish. The grip is a 6" western style and has not been cleaned or sanded (happily!) so it shows a little bit of tanning from use. The reel seat is an uplocking screwlock made of aluminum with the die stamp on the nut having "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg US Pat Off." The Spanish cedar spacer has a bit of varnish roughness. The rod packs in the original bag (the hang tag is missing) and the original tube with white felt in the brass cap. All original Paynes like this are scarcer and scarcer, especially in a very trouty size like this. The rod is straight and the ferrules fits are good to go.
