For sale here is a stunner from the 1960s Jim Payne rod shop and retailed through A&F, this 7 1/2' 2/2 Model 101 is in excellent completely original condition. The reel seat bears both the “Payne” trademark and the “Made for Abercrombie and Fitch” stamps. The 101 is one of Jim Payne’s faster tapers, commanding a 5 wt. with a fluid authority. There is a small, shallow indentation in the Spanish cedar spacer and the cork grip has coloration from careful use. All else is superb. All sections are full length and straight, and the ferrule fit is perfect. The rod weighs 4.15 ounces with the screw-locking reel seat (which adds ½ ounce). Complete with original bag, tube, and ferrule plug. The tube has a few small dents which do not affect its purpose. This model was introduced in 1950 when Jim Payne developed a new set of faster dry fly tapers. Because it was offered for a short two decades by the Payne shop, because it is tightly held in current collections, and because it is a very popular length and action, this rod is virtually impossible to find for sale.
