For sale here is a Payne Model 205 - 8'6" 3/2 for a 5-6 weight line. The rod is in excellent restored condition. All sections are full length without repair. there is a slight set in one of the tips. Classic browntone cane, traditional chestnut brown silks with black tipping. The ruby colored, agate stripping guide dates the rod to pre-WWII. The magenta, gold and black tipping at the winding check, and male ferrules is original, skillfully saved in the restoration. Blued guides, ferrules, and winding check -- the bluing is worn but I chose not to re-blue it, though the sliding band on the reel seat did receive new bluing with the original Payne formula. Mildly swelled butt. Bronzed hook-keeper. Cigar grip with a cap and ring reel seat over a lightly varnished Spanish cedar spacer. “Sold byClapp & Treat Co Inc. Hartford" stamped on the butt cap. The grip has been cleaned and displays some very slight ridging. Therod weighs 4.40 oz. Ferrule sizes 15/64 and 9/64, the fit is excellent. Just a fabulous casting rod for medium to big water. Medium-fast action. This would make a nice canoe rod. Deftly restored byPaul Fischer in late 2016. Includes replacement bag and handsome vintage leather tube with an internal brass tube although the leather strap is broken.
This is a very fine old Payne that needs to be fished again! Offered here for a very nice price compared to the other 8 1/2 foot Paynes currently on the market. Priced to sell quickly at the request of the consignor.
