A Payne model 208 fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #6 or #7 line. Medium fast action. Full length and with excellent ferrule fits. However, this rod has had some careful doctoring along the way. One tip has two areas of splinter damage and they have been glued down and varnished over. The entire tip had an excellent and very thin coat of varnish. Both tips and the upper mid have a downstream set. Overall, the varnish is very good with a small scrape on the mid the only problem. The wraps are brown with red edges and an extra band of yellow and red at the keeper and male ferrules. The tip tops are wrapped red-brown-red. The keeper is one flat right. The grip is a medium cigar 6" long and has been chemically cleaned at least once, witnessed by the thin dark lines between corks. Thankfully no scrubbing or sandpaper was used. The reel seat is a flatted Spanish cedar cap and ring. The butt cap has 75% of its original oxidation but the ring retains only about 5%. The cap is stamped "Payne" in the cartouche and "Reg U.S. Pat Off". On the reverse "Sold by, Abercrombie & Fitch Co., New York". The tube looks original and the cap has white felts, but no ferrule plugs. The bag is a cheap replacement.
