An EF Payne Model 97 bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for what feels like a #3 or #4. Delicate medium fast action. 2.8 ounces. Lightly used condition, and it's possible that the rod may have been refinished or perhaps had a dip-over at some point as the varnish on the wraps is slightly heavier than usual and the grip appears to have been sanded on a lathe. I can't say definitively however. As is sometimes seen on shorter Payne models, the front and rear cork check are absent. The agate stripper and butt cap die stamp date this rod to the early 1950's. The main wraps are brown with yellow edges with a purple edge at the keeper and male ferrules. The ferrules retain 99% of their oxidation. The grip is 5" long and done in the typical medium cigar style. As mentioned, I suspect it has been sanded with a very fine sandpaper at some point in the past. The rod bag is the original olive poplin but is missing the hang tag. The tube is in very fine condition with white felt in the top and the Payne data sticker affixed to it.
