A superb Sam Carlson "Four" quad bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2-piece, 2-tip and built for what feels to me like a #3 line. Serial #822-4752. Near mint condition with just the slightest hint of use. It weighs 3.3 ounces on my scale. Medium-slow, full flexing action. "Carlson 'Four'", the serial number, and "CW Sam Carlson - Maker" inked on the butt. The rod is pin straight and the ferrule fits are excellent. Medium wheatstraw cane built in a semi random node pattern. Superb varnish (no surprise there with Sam!). Dark red wraps with black signatures and tipping at the keeper and male ferrules. The serial number is also inked just above the male ferrules on each tip. The oxidized broached ferrules are superb and retain their full oxidation. The grip is approximately 6 1/2" long and is a half wells profile squared at the top and topped with the black tenite cork check. The seat is an uplocking slide band and the spacer is cork flanked by tenite on either end, one end of which goes under the seat to form a hidden pocket cap. The very bottom inch of the spacer is wood, capped at the bottom by a black tenite cap. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and aluminum tube with aluminum fittings and Sam's business card taped to the outside under the collar. Sam made only about 300 rods in his lifetime and finding them is challenging, let alone in this kind of superb condition. A stunner!
