A superb Sam Carlson quad bamboo fly rod, 8'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #9 or #10 line. Serial #759-4852S". Mint original uncast condition. Medium fast action. It is inscribed on the shaft "Made by CW 'Sam' Carlson" one flat right, then "Carlson Four" two flats right, then "759-4852S", three flats right. The original owner's name is also inked on the shaft. The rod weighs 7.2 ounces on my scale. I must say that I find this rod to be one of the most magnificent I've handled in a very long time. Just a beauty. The serial number indicates that the rod was made in 1975, and was the 9th rod done that year. Quadrate construction. The rod varnish is flat and perfect. The wraps are maroon with black edges at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. There are two striping guides on teh butt and black HSS snakes and tip tops. The keeper is one flat right and the owner's name, as mentioned, is inked on the wrap flat. The grip is 8" and turned to a western profile with a hidden pocket cap and flatted at the front for a large black tenite front cork check. The uplocking screwlock is the FE Thomas style with the "light bulb" threads of polished aluminum. The walnut spacer is unvarnished. The seat has a tenite button to retain the screwlock nut and also contains a ferrule for the fighting butt. There is a 5/8" long ferrule plug made of black tenite and wood that is just perfect with the nickel silver pint centered on the black tenite. The accompanying fighting butt is 4" long and has a nickel silver ferrule, a tenite collar and bottom. The rod packs into a tan rod bag which has a pocket for the fighting butt, and a large aluminum tube. Just a marvelous job by Sam here and a testament to his skill as a rodmaker.
