A nice Maxwell period HL Leonard model 39DF-5 bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 2-piece, 2-tips, and built for a #5 line. Serial number #435, with a manufacture date circa 1979. The rod weighs 3.9 ounces on my scale. Medium fast, dry fly action. Lightly used condition with some very light soiling to the gip and some oxidation loss to the cap and ring, but that's about it. The rod is nice and straight and the ferrules fit perfectly. The rod has the Leonard "standard" blonde color cane, done in a three up node pattern with a gentle swell into the grip. Excellent varnish. The rod is wrapped in a light honey color, tipped in red and dark honey at the keeper, ferrule, and tip tops. Carbide stripper with black guides and tip tops. The step ferrules have the characteristic pewter oxidation which is 100% intact on both the male and female. The grip is 5 1/2" long and shaped to a medium cigar with a gradual taper into the front cork check. The reel seat is a cap and ring design over a mortised and varnished maple spacer, and the cap has the HL Leonard Rod Co stamp in a cartouche. The rod packs into the original tan cloth bag and original aluminum tube with brass fittings.
