An FE Thomas Fairy model bamboo fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #3 or #4 line. Crisp DF action. The rod weighs 2.5 ounces on my scale. Fair condition. The rod is original and full length. The reverse twist guides show considerable wear and the thickness of the varnish indicates an overcoat in the distant past. The guide wear is at odds with the straightness of the rod and the shiny varnish, leading me to think that the rod has seen some professional attention in the recent past, some polishing and straightening at least. Oven tempered cane with slightly darker nodes. Gold main wraps with red edges, and a full suite of gold intermediates. The signature wraps are two gold, one red, 6 gold, one red, and one gold. The heavy varnish has chips and the bag imprint has been largely polished out. Gray agate stripper and reverse twist guides. The step ferrules are polished bright and still fit well. The front cork check does not have the keeper and never did. The diminutive grip is 4 1/2" long and has some ridging from cleaning. The nickel silver cap and ring seat is hand flatted and the wood may be a light walnut or butternut. "FE Thomas / Special / Bangor ME" is stamped on the hardware. There is no date stamp on the camp but only a target which I believe indicates that this rod is a pre-1910 Fred Thomas built rod. The bag is dark brown with period tube.
