For sale here is a Julius Vom Hofe salmon reel made for Dame Stoddard of Boston. 4" diameter and 1 3/4" pillar length, which approximates the spool width at its widest point. Adjustable disc drag with bi-drectional click/pawl. German silver and hard rubber construction. The spool flanges are also nickel silver. Brass fittings internally in addition to the arbor and spindle. The hard rubber is in fine shape with no chips or cracking, just some honest marks from over 100 years of fishing. The drag is in good condition and is medium-strong when in the "on" position. The brass drag arm has stamped on it, "Julius Vom Hofe Pat. Oct 20 1903". The outer edges of the screw holes on the sideplates remain perfectly round owing to the fact the plates have never been buffed or polished. The screws also remain in excellent condition. The rosette washers used on the backplate are a highly unusual feature rarely seen on a Vom Hofe fly reel. The adjustment lever knob is made of ebonite as well, representing another perhaps unique feature on a JVH fly reel. The gear teeth edges remain super sharp to this day, as does the pawl. One spool flange and both inner ebonite sideplates are stamped with "14". The nickel silver rings are ding-free. The reel foot is also unmolested. and straight. The "4" stamping on the reel foot could represent what became known as size 4/0. I'm guessing at that one. The reel comes with presumably its original leather reel case in well-worn condition and a detached strap.
Another fine Julius Vom Hofe salmon reel in superb condition!
