A nice Darryl Whitehead bamboo fly rod, 7'9", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #6 line. Medium fast action. Mint condition. Serial #51C. The rod weighs 5.1 ounces on my scale. This rod is intended to pair up with a matching Joe Saracione reel of the same serial # described below. Flamed cane in a spiral node spacing. Superb varnish. The main wraps are brown with black edges, and a band of apricot and black at the keeper and male ferrules. Agate stripper and black snake guides. The Swiss ferrules are polished and engraved by Paolo Barbetti (the female is also capped with a nickel silver and bone ferrule plug). The 6" western style grip is composed of 1/4" corks. The reel seat is a down-locking nickel silver screwlock of opposed pocket caps. The pocket caps are engraved by Paolo as well. The perfectly varnished spacer is smoky veined walnut. The bottom cap is engraved "D.L. Whitehead, Maker, Ser 51C, 1982." The rod packs into a red cloth bag and an Arne Mason leather tube with aluminum insert and brass collar and tops (the top is engraved as well).
A gorgeous Saracione Deluxe fly reel, 3 1/4" diameter and set up for RHW. Serial #51C, designed to go with the Whitehead rod of the same serial number described above. Mint condition, I could find no sign of use. Stainless steel rings and delrin sideplates. Comes with an Arne Mason leather reel case. Fixed click drag. Capacity is a DT6 line + 50 yds 20# dacron backing. A fantastic model for those looking for a classic S-handle style trout reel.
