A nice Walt Carpenter Browntone bamboo fly rod, 8’, 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a DT #4/5 line. The rod was made in 1995 and weighs 4.3 ounces. Medium full-flexing rod. The rod tube data sticker suggests a triangle taper line for this rod. It has the typical Browntone flamed cane and is done in a three-up node pattern. The rod has seen very little use, with almost no hand soiling to the grip and little brassing to the snake guides. There are two tiny hook impacts near the top of the butt, though they do not appear to go through to the cane. The main wraps are brown with black edges and a band of yellow and purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The rod has the ferrule sizes noted in ink on the rod. The step ferrules are tight and oxidized. The grip is 6 1/2” long and done in a western profile with a hidden pocket cap for the up-locking screw lock. The screw lock is polished aluminum with a detached slide. The slide is stamped “W.E. Carpenter, Maker” in a cartouche. The spacer is varnished walnut. The screw lock bottom is a nicely styled acorn similar to that of Payne rods. The rod comes with a cloth bag and a brushed aluminum tube with brass hardware and Walt’s data sticker.
