For sale here is a very rare Payne Model 223 two-handed salmon rod -- 11'6" with three sections and two tips. All original and excellent condition. The mid and butt sections are double-built and provide tremendous power. All sections are full length with slight sets in the tip sections.
Moderately dark cane finish with chocolate brown silks and gold tipping. Gold and copper tipping at the winding check, male ferrules, and tip-tops. Oxidized reverse-twist guides. Ring hook keeper. The cigar-style fore-grip is 8 1/2" in length. It appears to have been cleaned and remains in excellent condition. Aluminum down-locking reel seat over a Spanish Cedar spacer. The spacer shows a bit of wear from the sides of reel feet. The initials "JFC" are lightly carved into the reel foot recess of the threaded portion of the seat. The Payne logo appears on the locking ring. The lower grip is 7" in length from the beginning of the cork to the end of the butt cap. The rubber butt cap remains in like new condition free of defects. The butt cap is marked, "Sold By Abercrombie & Fitch Co. New York". The ferrules are size 23/64 and 15/64 with a great fit. The rod weighs 15.20 oz.
The description from a 1950's Payne catalog reads, "These rods have more casting and killing power per ounce of weight than any others made."The Model 223 remains a formidable rod for the pursuit of large fish.
Includes the original canvas bag and the poplin tip and mid bag with the hang-tag intact. Unfortunately, the tube that once likely housed the tips and mid is not included.
