A nice Sweetgrass bamboo fly rod, 8', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 or #5. Serial #1221. Excellent lightly used condition with a small amount of soiling to the grip, and one tiny varnish chip between the second and third guide from the tip on one of the tip sections (the other doesn't appear to have ever been used). Very clean. Medium-fast, full flexing action. The ferrule fits are good, and the rod is nice and straight. Medium wheatstraw colored cane done in a two opposed node pattern construction. The varnish is nicely done and in great condition. The ferrules have the typical Winston-style overwraps. Light caramel colored wraps with cinnamon tipping at the grip, ferrules, and tip-top (the small signature wrap above the inscription on the rod is black with caramel tipping). Agate stripper. Mildly sculpted full wells grip with an oxidized rear cork check and ring over a mortised and stabilized burl wood spacer that flares at the bottom to keep the ring on (a small oxidized disc is also inset in the bottom of the seat. The rod packs into a burgundy colored cloth bag with "SR" embroidered on the flap and an aluminum tube with the sweetgrass data sticker and brass fittings. There is also a handsome tan twill outer rod tube bag as well.
