A nice EF Payne model 198 bamboo fly rod, 7'6", 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. Dry fly action. Weighs 3.8 ounces. A very high quality refinished rod that is a late 1940's or early 1950's vintage (I'm told that the refinish was done by Don Schroeder). Brown wraps with yellow edges with a band of purple at the ferrules and keeper. Agate stripping guide and black HSS snake guides. The ferrules are oxidized and re-pinned and are nice and tight. The rod is also nice and straight. The grip is a medium cigar profile 5 3/4" in length and is a replacement. The slide band seat spacer looks like walnut and the oxidized cap and ring hardware has the "Payne / Reg US Pat Off" and "Sold by Abercombie and Fitch NY" stamps. The olive rod bag is correct but the hang tag has become detached and is tucked into the tube cap. The brass top is missing the felt, but otherwise the tube looks great. A nice refinish here of one of Paynes most well-liked tapers.
