A nice Maxwell Leonard model 50-5 bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tips, and built for a #5 line. Serial #8073, dating to early 1980 during the Maxwell period. The rod weighs 4.4 ounces. Moderate use with light grip soiling, some brassing to the inner guides and casting cracks at the ferrule wraps. Medium to fast action. The cane is flamed with small pressed nodes done in a three up configuration. The main wraps are plum with purple and red edges at the keepers and male ferrules. Agate stripper and black snakes. The Leonard step ferrules are all oxidized pewter with 100% of the original oxidation. The grip is 6" long and shaped to a slim cigar. The tiger Maple seat is a tad bit tight but the slide band will still move. The slide band and cap have a bit of edgewear to the oxidation. The cap is stamped “H.L. Leonard Rod Co., The Rod Maker, since 1869.” The rod packs into a tan cloth rod bag and sanded aluminum tube with brass appointments.
