A nice HL Leonard 38-3 Catskill Special fly rod, 7', 2-piece, 2-tip, built for a #3 line. Serial #8451. Medium fast action with fine delicate tips (this feels like a great trico rod). Lightly used with some discoloration of the grip and edgewear to the cap and ring seat hardware. The serial number denotes a 1984 manufacture date, the Larry foster period, near the end of the company. The rod is flame treated like the Hunt. 3 up node pattern construction. Very nice varnish. A circle snake guide (the feet almost touch each other) is substituted for a stripper. The wraps are white silk with red edges. The step ferrules are oxidized black as well as the snake guides and tip tops. The serial # is lettered on the wrap flat and "Catskill Special 38-3" on the opposite flat. There is no front cork check, its place taken by a short keeper wrap. The rear cork check is the lip of the wood reel seat which itself is varnished walnut. The stamp on the cap and ring seat reads "The Leonard, Rod, H.L. Leonard Rod Co, Makers" The grip is an aesthetically pleasing 10 cork 5" slim cigar. The rod bag is khaki-colored and has no stiffener. The rod tube is brushed aluminum with a brass bottom, top, and collar. The collar has a large die stamp "H.L. Leonard Rod Co, the rod maker, since 1869". Ferrule fits are good and this rod is as straight as the day it left the shop. This rod will make someone very happy when it finds a new home, a very nice light line rod indeed.
