A nice Mark Canfield (Red Willow and Co.) "Special Bass Bug Tournament" fly rod, 7'8", 2-piece, 2-tip, built for a #6 or #7 line. Serial #482. The rod weighs in at a robust 5.0 ounces. New, unfished condition. The paper on the grip is dated December 2016 and states that the rod is made from "E.C. Powell cane via Tony Maslan". Fast action but flexes down 90% of the rod. Medium chestnut-colored oven tempered cane with darker nodes in a 3 up configuration. Very good varnish with wraps of a gold and black jasper. The edges are an orange-red (Chinese red?). There is a complex pattern of Jasper, Chinese red, and purple wraps at the keeper wrap. The rod is set up with a carbide stripper and bronze snake guides. "M. Canfield Special Bass Bug Tournament" is artfully lettered on the guide flat. The swiss ferrules are oxidized, however, for some reason the oxidation on the female did not take very well and it has been varnished over. The Ritz style grip is 6 1/4" long. The slide band reel seat is varnished, mortised Koa wood. The cap and ring are oxidized and in a nice touch a horseshoe is stamped on the bottom of the butt cap. "Red willow and Co, Mark Canfield, Maker" is stamped on the reverse from the wrap flat. Olive cloth rod bag. Aluminum tube with brass top, collar, and bottom.
