An EF Payne bamboo fly rod, 8'6", 2-piece, 2-tips, and built for a #7 line. Fast DF action. 5.4 ounces. Excellent condition with good varnish and just minor cosmetic casting cracks at the ferrules wraps and a small amount of guide wear. I am not certain but I suspect that this rod had a professional refinish as the grip has first been cleaned and then turned smooth. I also see a few gaps in the edge winds that are unlike what you would find in an original. The rod is straight and the ferrule fits are excellent. The main wraps are brown with black edges with an extra band of yellow and purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripping guide is an orange agate. There is no appreciable wear to the ferrule oxidation. The grip is 6" long and turned to a western style profile. As mentioned, it has been cleaned and sanded. The reel seat is an uplocking screwlock with a hidden pocket cap up in the heel of the grip. The wood spacer appears to be Spanish cedar. The screwnut is stamped "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg US Pat Off" with "Sold by, H+D Folsom Arms Co, New York" on the reverse. The rod bag is the original olive poplin though unfortunately is missing the hang tag is missing. It would have been nice as I'm not sure what model Payne this was, as it is slightly heavier than the 100-series rods in this length. In some respects it reminds me slightly of the Canadian Canoe model, though of course those are three-piece rods. The rod packs into an original tube with a grey felt insert in the brass cap. A nice powerful Payne here that will throw as much line as you can handle.
