An early Ed Payne bamboo fly rod, 8', 3-piece, 2-tip built for what feels to me like a #4. Slow-ish, full-flexing action. 3.8 ounces. I suspect a manufacture date circa 1900. Refinished condition, though with a few small things that might have been addressed (e.g., there are pencil marks where every wrap should go). Very similar in design to the Leonard Catskill models of the period with a snake guide for a stripper. Early high slant snake guides wrapped with Chinese red. The varnish is in fair condition with a lot of bag alligatoring. The ferrules are lovely pot belly style and the check resembles those of the Leonard rods. The cork grip has been replaced but an attempt has been made to replicate the very short (4") and delicately tapered original. The nodes are randomly spaced with several areas of adjacency. The strips are oven tempered as witnessed by the darker nodes. The ferrules have been re-set and are wrapped without reference to the lineup marks. The rod is packed in a late model yellow Leonard bag and a tube that could be either an early Payne or a Leonard.
