For sale here is a Payne Model 197 bamboo rod from the 1960's. 7'6 3/2 for a 4 weight line. The rod weighs 4 1/8 oz with the up-locking reel seat over the standard spanish cedar spacer. A classic Payne rod with the "Made for Abercrombie & Fitch Co." die stamp on the up-locking ring, along with the Payne die stamp. The rod is wrapped brown with gold edges. The grip is western-style and has been cleaned with no ridging present. Complete with ferrule plugs and hang tag. Original bag and tube with nice label. This rod was purchased by my consignor as a one-tip original rod. A&F delivered some one-tip rods in the late 60's according to one source. The second tip was made later by George Guba with original Payne components. The guides used for the replacement tip are slightly bigger than the original tip guides. The ferrules sizes are 9/64 and 14/64. The replacement tip has a slight fishing set and the tip top is slightly bent. The original tip is dead straight, as are the butt and mid sections. Good ferrule fit on all sections.
This rod was purchased by my consignor from the son of a doctor. This doctor saved the life of one of his patients, who was then so grateful that he expressed his appreciation by buying the doctor this Payne rod!
The Payne Model 197 is a very difficult rod model to find. This one comes complete with all of the bells and whistles.
