A nice EF Payne model 400 bamboo fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, built for a #8. 6.6 ounces. Late 1950's or early 1960's model. Good original condition. It has some crazing to the wraps at the ferrules and a bit of chipping to the ferrule coating but I see no problems with the bamboo at all. There is a tiny amount of wear to the inner snake guides. The varnish is hard and in very good condition. Brown main wraps, red edges, with an extra band of yellow and purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The stripping guide is a #12 perfection. High arch snakes and small hoop tip-tops complete this rod. Medium fast action. The ferrule fits are tight and the oxidation is 95% intact with some chipping to the coating. 6 1/2" long western style grip that has been cleaned with a hidden pocket cap in the heel. The reel seat spacer is varnished spanish cedar. The uplocking aluminum screwlock has the previous owner's initials engraved "J.H.E.". The Screw nut is stamped "Payne" in a cartouche and "Reg US Pat Off" and on the reverse "Made for Abercrombie and Fitch". There is a nickel silver removable plug for the fighting butt, alas, the fighting butt is missing. I suspect this rod originally came with a canvas outer bag with the fighting butt pocket, though it does not currently have it. Original bag with the hang tag and original tube (which has a few dents) with the grey felt in the top.
