An EF Payne Parabolic model fly rod, 7'9", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. Serial #37356 and a 1950's model. 3.8 ounces on my scale. Medium action. This is a parabolic taper with a progressively steeper taper toward the tip top and a flatter butt, as opposed to a parabolic action with a heavy tip which drives the action into the butt. The condition is very good original with two exceptions: first, the grip has been cleaned, leaving it somewhat ridged, and second, the first snake guide above the stripper has been re-wrapped. The owner's name is inked on the butt. The varnish is in excellent original condition. The wraps are brown with yellow edges and the stripper is a 1950's perfection. The guides are reverse twist bronze with very little interior brassing. The step ferrules retain 99% of the original jet black oxidation. The rod is perfectly straight. The grip is a medium cigar with an all cork seat with a ring and pocket cap. The pocket cap has a tiny bit of edgewear to the oxidation and in addition to the "Payne, Reg Us Pat Off" stamp also has "Sold by, Von Lengerke + Antoine, Chicago". The rod comes with the original Payne hang tag. The tube is also original but with a small, shallow dent. The brass cap has the grey felt insert.
