For sale here is a Lew Stoner, San Francisco-era Winston bamboo fly rod -- 8' 2/1 4-5wt labeled 3 7/8 oz. Serial #5956 made in 1945. The rod is in good condition with a few issues. There a small chips in the varnish throughout as well as some very minor alligatoring. The varnish on a few of the guide wraps shows some cracking and could use an overcoat at some point. The tip is down 2 1/2" and was re-wrapped with non-matching thread. Both ferrules need to be reset. The second stripping guide is slightly bent. Slight fishing set in the tip.
The rod features pumpkin-toned cane with bronze colored guide wraps. The ferrules and the winding check are wrapped with a bronze and black jasper thread with bronze tipping. Bright guides. Ruby colored agate stripping guide. The script remains clean and bold with one exception; the original owner's name has been removed and another name in different handwriting is in its place. Ring hook-keeper. Handsome bakelite winding check. Full wells grip. The cork is moderately soiled and features some chipping at the bottom likely from having been used as a hook keeper. Bright aluminum down-locking reel seat with bakelite spacer. There is a small chip in the spacer just above the butt cap. This in no way hinders the use or function of the seat. The ferrules are size 14/64, the fit is nice and tight. The actual weight of the rod is 3.95 oz. The action is a terrific swift, yet smooth medium fast perfect for all-around fishing. The rod includes the original satin-like bag with label and the original tube that is missing its cap.
Despite the issues, this is an absolutely classic rod from the co-founder of the Winston rod company. Get it for a great price here!
