A HL Leonard Model 40-5 bamboo fly rod, 8', 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #5 line. Serial #80128 with a 1980 manufacture date. 4.4 ounces. A Maxwell period rod with the amber seat color, tiny nodes, and the pewter colored ferrule oxidation. Mint uncast condition. Medium fast dry fly action. Flamed cane with small pressed nodes in a three up configuration. Superb varnish. The wraps are a plum color with a purple and red edge at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. Agate stripper and black snake guides. The step ferrules are oxidized pewter. The grip is 6" long and shaped to a slim cigar profile. The cap and ring seat is oxidized and the cap has the late model stamp "HL Leonard Rod Co, The Rod Maker, Since 1869". The mortised curly maple seat has the aforementioned amber color varnish from an extra oven temper (I did these at Leonard by baking the seats in the oven). The ferrule fits are super and the rod is factory straight. The rod packs into a tan cloth bag and aluminum tube with brass fittings.
