A nice Thomas and Thomas Montana model bamboo fly rod, 8'6", 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #8 line. Serial #2830. The rod weighs 6 ounces on my scale. The original owner's initials are inked several inches up the shaft from the maker, model, and rod information. Varnished model. The rod appears to have been lawn cast at most, as I could find no evidence of it having been fished. Powerful medium action. The rod is nice and straight and the ferrules seat nicely. Medium wheatstraw colored cane done in a three up node pattern. Excellent varnish. Apricot main wraps, with red and black tipping at the keeper, and black tipping at the ferrules and tip tops. Mildrum stripping guide with black stainless guides and black tip tops. Oxidized pewter swiss-style ferrules. The grip is 6 1/2" long and shaped to a western profile with a hidden pocket cap at the heel. The reel seat features a varnished spacer (it looks like walnut to me) with an uplocking screwlock. The T&T makers mark is stamped into the sliding ring. The bottom of the reel seat is provisioned for a fighting butt which accompanies the rod and packs into a separate compartment in the bottom of the rod tube when not in use. The rod packs into a tan poplin bag with a stiffener and the original aluminum tube with brass fittings.
